Hansel & Gretel: A Fairy Tale Opera
by E. Humperdinck
November 10 at 4 pm
The Brothers Grimm gave us the original tale of Hansel & Gretel -- Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter who never have enough to eat. When they overhear their stepmother plotting to lead them into the forest and abandon them, Hansel sneaks outside and collects white pebbles, which he uses to leave a secret trail that helps him and his sister find their way home. The following night, however, Hansel finds the house door locked; this time, when they are led into the forest, he leaves a trail of breadcrumbs, all of which are eaten by birds. The children stumble upon a house made of gingerbread and candy. An ugly old woman welcomes them, and they discover that she is a witch. She imprisons Hansel in a shed, planning to cook and eat him. Gretel tricks the witch into climbing into her own oven. The children collect jewels from the witch’s house and make their way home, where they find their stepmother is gone. With the jewels, father and children can live happily ever after and never be hungry again.
The popular television series Once Upon A Time brought a present-day twist to the tale while celebrating the old. Once Upon A Time depicts a fictional seaside town of Storybrooke, Maine, where the residents are actually characters from various fairy tales transported to the "real world" town and robbed of their real memories by a powerful curse. Each episode will feature a primary Storybrooke storyline as well as a secondary storyline from another point in time in that character's life before the curse was enacted. The “True North” episode, present-day Sheriff Emma Swan helps two children track down their father before they are placed in a foster care system, in a parallel with the story of Hansel and Gretel. Along the way, they encounter the Evil Queen and the Blind Witch (Emma).
Hansel and Gretel: A Fairy Tale Opera was first conducted in Weimar by Richard Strauss in 1893, followed by its Hamburg premiere in September 1894, conducted by Gustav Mahler. It finally found its way to the American Metropolitan Opera.
First Coast Opera will bring the tale to the St. Augustine stage at Flagler College’s Lewis Auditorium on Sunday, November 10 at 4 pm. Adults $25, student ID $10, family tickets $50 (2 adults, 2 children). Purchase tickets online at www.firstcoastopera.com or call 904.417.5555.
