Did you know that Claude Monet was known not only for the obvious -- the founder of French impressionist painting -- but that he was a serious foodie and gourmet artiste? In fact, “just as the inspiration for many of his paintings was drawn from his beloved gardens and the surrounding Normandy landscape, the meals served at Giverny were based upon superb ingredients from the kitchen-garden (a work of art in itself), the farmyard, and the French countryside” [Monet’s Table by Claire Jones]. This St Augustine bed and breakfast has brought his paintings to its décor and added one of his recipes to the menu!
Reproductions of Water Lilies 1906, Promenade Near Argenteuil, and Garden Path at Giverny are displayed in the newly-remodeled room Elizabeth at Bayfront Westcott House B&B. These were chosen to represent the period during which Westcott House was built. Elizabeth's Room presents with classic charm but modern elegance. Inside the Main House on the first floor, Elizabeth offers her guests two Queen-sized beds (accommodating up to four people), lavished by Comphy Linens. The seating area boasts a marble-topped table, 2 antique chairs, and a 40-inch flat-screen television. The bathroom features a clear-glass vessel sink with swan neck and a walk-in shower adorned with mosaic tile and a rainfall shower head. The dark wood floor contrasts beautifully with the light palette and antique furnishings.
Located on Avenida Menendez in St Augustine FL, the house was built in 1880 as a private residence for Dr. John Westcott who was well known for his prominent military career, interests in transportation and politics, and research efforts in the cause and cure of yellow fever. He was a land surveyor for the St. Johns Railroad (whose tracks spread from the San Sebastian River to Tocoi) and was a heavy hitter in the development of the Intracoastal Waterway that links the St. Johns River to Miami.
The house changed hands a few times over the years and saw its fair share of soirees amongst St. Augustine’s elite. In the 1970s, it was converted into a guest house and has been entertaining tourists and travelers ever since! Today, Bayfront Westcott House is a 16-room, full-service bed and breakfast. Every room has a private entrance. Most rooms have a Jacuzzi tub, electric fireplace, and outdoor sitting area. In every room guests enjoy hypoallergenic microfiber sheets; plush but ecofriendly towels; and HydroSpa bath products.
After a great night’s sleep, breakfast is always a treat at this St Augustine bed and breakfast, with feature dishes to include Baked French Toast with Sausage (French bread, ground cinnamon, and some serious other goodies, and there’s a process … it isn’t just thrown together morning-of); Bayfront Breakfast Casserole (special bacon and egg casserole baked in individual ramekins, infused with a secret ingredient that makes it souffle-like--light and fluffy and full of flavor); Eggs Benedict with a signature hollandaise sauce dribbled over fresh egg, ham, and a toasted English muffin; Country Scramble (eggs and ham with sautéed onions and peppers); Tuscan Souffle (Italian sausage, eggs, cheese, tomatoes, and red onion); and Classic Egg, Bacon, and Asiago Quiche (potato crusted).
